Sixteen teams paraded before the principals of the K&S Entertainment group,
government officials and those of the Normalization Committee, all aspiring to win the top prize when the 25th edition of the K&S Football extravaganza got underway at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground. Now, weeks later, the weeds have been separated from the crops and this evening the four top teams will battle to determine which will contest for the finals and a chance to cuddle the ‘Holy Grail’ when activities conclude at the National Stadium, Providence on Sunday April 5.
In the first match, Slingerz will attempt to extend its winning streak when it opposes Rhythm Squad just before Pele throws down the gauntlet on Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United. Maybe, the biggest surprise is Slingerz, who despite sporting several top players the likes of Vurlon Mills, Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams and Dwayne Jacobs, were not considered by the pundits for the top spot. That unit has shown remarkable improvement and has played its way to championship honours at the recently concluded Mayor’s Cup title.
Conquerors FC came full of promise but were given marching orders compliments of goals from Dwayne Lawrence and another Anthony Abrams (not ‘Awo) who has been the lynchpin of the Slingerz’ unit. Tonight they will depend on those star players but must be wary of the opposition who sports such big names as Amos and Lyliton Ramsay; the former patrols the left wing while the latter is the central mid-fielder. These two have presented immense challenges to the opposition and once they click tonight, could very well be the decisive players of tonight’s match. Add defensive player, Kester Allen and right back, Aquill Liefde and Slingerz would feel that it is in with a chance.
Pele owes a debt of gratitude to Konata Manning who held his nerve to score a classic equalizer in the game with Winners Connection after Rawle Gittens netted for in the 26th minute. Okenie Fraser offered valuable support and assisted Pele in reaching tonight’s stage. Those two apart, Pele could also depend on the skills of star striker, Omallo Williams who is always a clear and present danger and though he did not score in the quarterfinals, he should not be ruled out from tonight’s game.
Pele will miss Shemroy Arthur who was cited for dangerous play that netted him an instantaneous red card in the preceding game but will feel comforted with a strong offensive lineup supported by an impregnable defence cordon.
‘The Hammers’ have proven their worth over and over again but they will have to retain their form against a tough Pele unit. Dwayne Jacobs was sidelined with an injury in the previous game but may be in the squad tonight. Add the likes of Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant and the ever dependable man between the uprights, Ronson Abrams and fans know that this game would go all the way down to the wire.
The battle lines are drawn and tonight’s games are expected to provide firework. Which teams will survive? Fans would have to visit the venue for the answer to this tickling question. The teams will also be fully aware of the 2 million dollars up for the winner and will go all outs to clinch that sum. The runners up will win half that amount while the third and fourth place finishers will collect five hundred thousand and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars respectively. There will also be trophies which will be presented for individual and team performances.
