Scores of persons turned up at the Thirst Park Ground yesterday to support the Guyana Police Force (GPF)’s first Youth Exposition where young people within Georgetown and its outskirt got a chance to showcase their talents in various form.
The Expo was held between 11:00 to 17:00 hrs and saw the attendance of the Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud, ‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken and other senior police ranks along with businessmen and persons from various communities.
The main aim of the exhibition, according to Hicken, is to showcase the talent of the young people the police have been working with over the years.
The items on display include vase, floral arrangements, broaches, hand bands, chains, photo frames, hats, pillows, candle holders, baskets and handbags among others.
The beautiful pieces were made by young people, who came together from various communities on the East Bank Demerara and in Georgetown and formed 11 youth groups with the help of the police force.
Some of the communities include Grove, Mocha, Agricola, Tiger Bay, and Albouystown among others.
Divisional Commander Hicken said that the money gained from the event will go back to sustain the groups, since the police will be looking to commission new groups in other areas.
He said too that another reason for the youth expo is to have children who are from various backgrounds to communicate and interact with each other in an effort to learn each others’ culture.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the ‘A’ Division management handed over a playground to residents in the Rasville, Georgetown community.
The ground will be used by youths for recreational purposes.
“We went into the community and spoke with the leader and he told us that they needed help in materializing the park,” the Divisional Commander said.
He added that the park was necessary since youths in the community will get to use it when they are free.
Uniforms and football gears were presented to the youths during the official handing over of the ground.
