Even a lengthened period of rain failed to prevent competitors from giving their loyal fans a treat of exhilarating action during the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) season opening Drag Race Meet which was staged yesterday, at the South Dakota Circuit.
The event which attracted over sixty competitors saw Team Wrecker led by Anand Ramchand’s Misubishi Evolution being crowned overall champion of the day after winning the ten seconds category along with consistent performances in the other divisions.
Other drivers with top podium finishes were Chet Singh, who took pole in the eleven seconds category driving a Mitsbishi Evolution VII, Sanjay Persaud, who stole the spotlight in the twelve seconds division piloting a Mercedes SL 500, Roland Bana in the thirteen seconds category being at the helm of a Toyota Levin Les Thomas, who had things his way in the fourteen seconds division in the driver’s seat of a Toyota Corolla and Rayon Brijpal in the fifteen seconds category in a Toyota RunX.
Before a fair-sized crowd that braved the inclement weather enjoyed the thrill drivers provided for them with some nerve tingling drives on a wet South Dakota track that at times proved a bit dangerous for them to open the full throttle.
In the end it demonstrated that Drag Racing is growing in popularity and the GMR&SC now has another aspect of the sport which is taking off and could very well be a solid project to generate income.
