Pele survived a scare after Rawle Gittens netted for Winners Connection in the 26th minute and rebounded with the equalizer off the boot of Konata Manning in the 70th minute to send the game into extra time. Manning then
registered another success (90+17) with support from Okenie Fraser (90+12) during that session that eventually sealed the deal for his team 3-1.
The match was contested at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground last Saturday evening and was the main supporter of another quarterfinals match in the K&S football extravaganza that also saw Rhythm Squad defeating Western Tigers 4-1 on penalty kicks after regulation and extra time failed to yield a winner at nil all.
Pele commenced their trek uncharacteristically slow, while the opposition dug in with clever ball distribution. It was during a keen tussle for ball possession that Shemroy Arthur was cited for dangerous play that netted him an instantaneous red card and the opposing side a free kick from just outside the box. Gittens took the kick and his curling shot sped past Pele’s goalie that sent his team into the ascendency.
The success jolted Pele from its lethargy and thereafter their front men. Led by Konata Manning, upped the ante. The dapper striker was eventually rewarded when he was gifted a pass at approximately 35 yards from Winners’ goal and simultaneously unleashed a thunderous kick that shot past Winners’ Connection custodian and was only restrained by the network.
Omallo Williams did not score in the match but he was a clear and present danger, launching several dangerous raids to the Winners’ berth. With no further successes from either side up to the final whistle, the game went into extra time and it was during this period that Pele distinguished itself after Manning and Fraser drove in the final nail in Winners Connection’s coffin.
The tournament is now in the semifinal stages and this Wednesday Slingerz will attempt to extend its winning streak when it opposes Rhythm Squad just before Pele throws down the gauntlet on Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United. Those matches will be contested at the very DCC Ground and will determine which two teams will compete for the prestigious championship trophy and the two million dollars first prize package when activities conclude at the National Stadium, Providence on Sunday April 5.
The runners up will win half that amount, while the third and fourth place winners will collect five hundred thousand and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars respectively. There will also be trophies which will be presented for individual and team performances.
