After being hospitalized for over one month at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) an Aishalton father of five, is making progress. He is now out of a coma.
Ralph Smith, 55, of Aishalton Village, South Rupununi, sustained multiple fractures to his skull and trauma about his body after the vehicle in which he was travelling, crashed in the Savannah on February 11, last.
According to the injured man’s daughter, Rema Smith, 26, her father and eight other men were travelling to Lethem, to attend a workshop on Lands and Surveys hosted by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
The woman stated that the driver of the pick-up vehicle, Imran Khan, of Kitty was allegedly driving at a fast rate, when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle. As a result, the left front tyre “blew out”.
The vehicle spun out of control, toppled three times in the savannah.
She explained that nurses removed her father’s nasogastric tube on Saturday and they are closely monitoring him. “My father is making improvements, he is opening his eyes and responding to touches, but he cannot talk,” the woman said.
She was informed by nurses that if he is unable to eat on his own within the next three days, they will re-install the tube.
Although the injured man is still unable to swallow, officials at the GPHC, she stated, discharged him from the hospital Monday last.
However, Smith’s daughter explained that he still remains a patient at the hospital since the family has no place to accommodate him in Georgetown. She said that she sought lodging for him at the Amerindian Hostel, in Princes Street but the place was filled.
The woman affirmed that she would prefer him to stay in Georgetown until there are major improvements in his medical condition, because the hospital in Aishalton does not have adequate medical facilities. She said that she was advised by the hospital to keep her father in the City, in the event of an emergency.
The driver of the vehicle had been in police custody for 72 hours and has since been released on self bail, according to the woman.
She has since expressed her dissatisfaction about the entire situation. She said that it is unfair for her family. She further stated that her dad is the main source of income for their family and they are trying very hard to obtain money to carry food supplies for him on a daily basis.
“The driver should at least compensate us, or help out in some way. Since my father in the hospital, he never called or visited to see what is going on with my dad,” she said.
The woman said that the driver and her father were best friends. The man and her father would usually go everywhere together.
Further, she explained that she has left her job in neighbouring Brazil to be at her father’s bed side. The woman said that she is finding it very difficult financially since she has a four year old child to support.
Her mother, she said, came down the interior last week to visit her father and has since returned to take care of her younger sister and resume her job.
The woman said that she still remains hopeful and is praying for her father to make a full recovery soon.
Kaieteur News understands that a man from Karaubar, who was an occupant of the vehicle at the time of the accident, died on the spot. The remaining occupants, including the driver received minor injuries.
