The tournament has endured fluctuating fortunes but the organizers of the Kashif and Shanghai entertainment group proved that they are made of sterner stuff when they withstood those vicissitudes and this Friday,
March 20, the fruits of their labour will be manifested when they launch the 25th edition of the tournament at the DCC Ground, Alberttown.
The late businessman, Farouk Razac, had always supported the tournament and now that he has passed on to the great beyond, his family members continue to maintain the tradition and yesterday morning his sister and brother Farina Razac and Fazeel Razac aka Brother handed over a large trophy to Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major for the team occupying the third place position.
The duo will also donate prizes that will go to lucky patrons as a gate prize. Mr. Major gratefully accepted the gift and expressed gratitude to his benefactor.
He reminisced on those days before the death of the former CEO of Swiss House when Swiss House would be an ever present entity on the sponsors’ list. “We are delighted by this gesture which in reality is the continuation of the strong and cordial relations my group has enjoyed with Swiss House,” proclaimed Mr. Major as he accepted the gift.
Meanwhile, the organizers have worked tirelessly to tie up all the loose ends and have recently completed renovation works to the Demerara Cricket Club ground. This will be the venue for the grand opening and games and the K&S duo is intent on making a resounding statement.
The administrators (DCC) have recently installed light fixtures and K&S has pitched in with similar works to the perimeter fence. “We are sparing no effort to give the fans the qualitative tournament they have grown accustomed to,” explained Mr. Major.
Several other corporate citizens have committed to the success of the tournament including DDL, HJTV, Church’s Chicken, Sonic Business Services, Club 704, JGS and Ansa McAl among others.
In all, sixteen teams will vie for the top spot including Alpha United, Pele, Western Tigers, Rhythm Squad, GFC, Victoria Kings, Mahaica Determinators, New Amsterdam United, Slingerz FC, Den Amstel FC, Grove Hi Tec, Agricola Red Triangle, Winners’ Connection, Hi Stars and Bartica Beacon and Ann’s Grove.
Matches would be played at several venues around Georgetown as well as in the rural areas such as Mackenzie Sports Club ground, Uitvlugt and Leonora with the grand finals taking place at the National Stadium, Providence on Sunday April 5. The tournament will be officially launched with a march past at the DCC ground.
The winning team will cart off the two million dollars put up by Mohammad’s Enterprise with the runners up winning half that amount. The third and fourth place prizes are five hundred thousand and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars respectively. There will also be trophies which will be presented for individual and team performances.
