…granted $50,000 bail
Region Seven District Education Officer (DEO), Akbar Chindu, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Dellon Bess at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of sexual assault.
It is alleged that the DEO committed the unlawful act against an 18-year-old woman who was formerly employed at the Region Seven Education Department as an office staffer.
The woman, who also appeared in court yesterday, had reportedly resigned her position, shortly after highlighting the allegation of sexual assault last month.
Directing his attention to the DEO, the Magistrate asked if he was aware that if the allegation of sexual assault was true he could be convicted. Chindu responded by disclosing he was indeed cognisant of that fact. The man, moreover, pleaded “not guilty” to the charge.
Magistrate Bess went on to inquire of the DEO if he was still employed, to which he responded “yes,” and a similar question was asked of the woman who confirmed that she had resigned.
Although reports coming out of the Education Ministry suggest that the man had been off the job following reports of the alleged assault, this publication was able to ascertain that the man was still on the job even the day before appearing in court.
Minster of Education Priya Manickchand, has profusely refuted that the man is on the job based on reports from the Regional Education Officer. She has however vowed to investigate the matter further.
The court hearing came to an end yesterday with the DEO being granted $50,000 bail.
The matter is expected to be called again on March 27.
