Junior Clarke, alleged to be one of the two gunmen who were caught after robbing Stabroek Market vendor, Randolph Singh, at his Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home on Wednesday night, is claiming he is not a bandit.
Clarke allegedly told police ranks that he is a taxi driver.
The man claims that he plies his trade in front of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Clarke and Andy Nichols were arrested by police minutes after they left Singh’s home. Clarke was allegedly the driver of the getaway car.
The two men, along with an accomplice, assaulted and shot Singh before escaping with $600,000 in cash and a quantity of jewellery.
The assailants were captured following a chase which resulted in their car ending up in a trench during an exchange of gunfire with police ranks. A third suspect managed to escape.
Yesterday, while being treated at the GPHC for injuries sustained during the encounter, Clarke told police ranks that he received a call from Nichols, requesting a taxi at Mahaica.
He explained that when he reached the location, Nichols and his accomplice, who he would be meeting for the first time, had gotten into his car and asked to be transported to another location.
Clarke, according to police sources, said that when he drove off, he noticed a car following him and discharging rounds at them, but he had no idea it was the police.
He claimed that he got nervous and lost control of the vehicle which eventually ended up in the trench.
It was while in the trench that the two men were apprehended and their alleged accomplice managed to escape.
Kaieteur News was told that around 20:00hrs on Wednesday three men entered the Supply, Mahaica home of the vendor and robbed him of cash before shooting him.
It was related that the vendor’s neighbour was seated in his vehicle after arriving home from work and noticed that a man armed with a gun was heading in the direction of the victim’s residence.
The neighbour then left for the nearest police station where he alerted ranks of what was taking place. The neighbour transported the ranks to the location and they arrived just in time to see the bandits speeding out of the housing scheme in a Toyota AT192.
Reports are that the police ranks, in the civilian’s car, tracked the bandits who had driven to Mahaica Old Road in the vicinity of Unity. Realizing that they were being trailed, the bandits reportedly shot at the ranks who returned fire.
It is believed that Clarke, the driver of the getaway car, was not familiar with the area, since he misjudged a turn and ended up in a deep trench.
This newspaper was told that Clarke attempted to walk under the water but his dreadlocks sold him out, since the police ranks noticed his hair floating on the surface.
An unlicenced .32 Taurus Revolver with two rounds and two spent shells were recovered by the police.
The third suspect remains at large.
