Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me to share an annoying experience as a taxpayer. On many occasions I have been asked to submit a copy of returns submitted and lodged at the GRA Head Office, Camp Street. It seems as though the GRA has no value for taxpayers’ time and money.
How can the returns so often be misplaced? This should be once and afar if any at all. I recently submitted another return and was asked to provide a copy. I’m providing a copy for the last time because of the fact that I didn’t collect a lodgment receipt; reason being I was told by the staff at the counter that it will be sent to me through the post. How stupid was I to believe that!
On other occasions I would have made payments towards a specific tax type/period and the cashier posted it to a different period/tax type, even though the correct thing was on my records. Are these people focused at work or is there need for more workshops or supervision Mr Commissioner General? I had to write a letter asking GRA to transfer the payment to the correct period.
It wasn’t my fault, why didn’t GRA make the necessary adjustments since it was a mistake on their part? It angers me more to know the trouble we as taxpayers go through to get anything or carry out any transaction at GRA but they can misplaced ones record and simply demand a copy from us.
We sometimes go beyond just to get our returns in on time only to get a call asking if we submitted it and for a copy. Tell me Mr GRA chief is this the way taxpayers are harassed and taken for granted. I assure you if taxpayers feel they are treated dismissively then that could be contagious and taxpayers can decide to also be dismissive and open the court doors to have all the business done.
