Fire erupted at the Camp Street Georgetown Prisons last evening, after a number
of inmates set fire to a mattress in an ongoing unrest that resulted from a water shortage in the Capital division of the prison where remand inmates are held.
Responding to the fire, prison wardens, backed up by Police ranks and fire tenders, emptied the Capital division of its hundreds of occupants, placed them in another area and extinguished the burning mattress.
The officials then carried out a search of the division before relocating the visibly irate prisoners.
Even after the fire was extinguished, policemen with shields and helmets cordoned off sections of the prison. Loud intermittent noises from inmates were heard on the road as they tried to highlight their plight of not having potable water.
The inmates began banging on the walls of the building, prompting the deployment of riot squad police to quell the unrest.
