Point guard Travis Burnett reminded of his magic Sunday night at the
Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when he took over in the final period to lead Trinity Grid Holding (TGH) Pacesetters to a maiden National Basketball Championship title.
Burnett’s dominance helped tame Colts United 85-76 in Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) ‘Road to Mecca’ National Club Championship, impressively contributing 16 points in the last quarter that brought patrons to their feet.
Burnett scored eight straight points at the beginning of the decision period that gave his team the lead 65-61 with 7:43 remaining on the clock. The offensive exchange continued between both of the contenders before Burnett let loose again in paint.
Back-up guard, Ruel Ritch also came of age for Pacesetters, landing what would become a huge baseline three-point dagger to continue the team’s surge toward the title. Dave Causway and his side-kick, Shelroy Thomas helped Colts to 71-70 with 3:40 remaining, but that run turned out to be the last from the Colts.
Pacesetters went on to outscore them 15-4 as Colts squandered its chances from the free-throw line when they missed five crunch-time shots. On the contrary, Pacesetters ensured that it made all its free-throws under pressure, which helped them secure the win.
Burnett scored a game-high 28 points with shooting guard, Stephon Gillis, who was a part of the team’s early offensive plot adding 19 points. Ritch had nine points while Randy Richardson and Jermaine Hamilton scored seven points each.
Thomas and Causway finished with 19 and 17 points respectively while Haslym Hooper scored a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Nicko Fraser shot his way to 10 points and seven rebounds, before being overwhelmed down the stretch.
Former champions, Dyna’s Ravens settled for third place after they beat the team they played in the final last year, Linden’s Retrieve Raiders 72-51; Jermaine Slater led Ravens with a double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Marlon Rodrigues had 10 points while Darian Lewis supported Slater with nine points.
Keon Cameron led the Linden side with a game high 19 points while Stephan Tappin was a huge defensive presence in the paint, scoring 12 points, enforcing eight block shots and nine rebounds. Sheldon Noel scored nine points for Raiders, which finished fourth.
