Women who live alone and are afraid of becoming the next victim of an unknown intruder, who continues to launch attacks on, especially vulnerable women during the wee hours of the morning, took a bold step Friday afternoon as they stood in solidarity over their rights.
A peaceful protest was staged at the Anna Regina car park. The women carried placards that stated “respect women, especially elderly women”; “we need protection”, and “women have the right to live alone in safety.”
The women are contending that ever since the brutal rape and murder of 73-year-old, Suroogpattie Ramlakan, a/k “Auntie Carmen”, whose body was discovered in the hall of her Sideline Dam, Richmond, Essequibo home, almost a week ago, they are more terrified.
A young female neighbour who made the discovery, is proposing that the police continue to effect proper policing, especially regarding the recent incident and more so, in cases where women were raped and physically attacked.
Ramlakan died from manual strangulation and blunt trauma. She was buried on Tuesday.
Police have since detained one of Ramlakan’s nephews. They are contending that the pensioner was not raped but conditions were created to fake a rape. Condoms and a raincoat were also recovered.
Elfreda Munroe, a/k “Nanna Odeka, a resident of Richmond Village, said that she joined the women in protest because of the crime and violence that have been taking place recently.
Munroe stressed that women’s homes have been invaded and broken into, while attacks of attempted rape and rape have been taking place. Munroe believes that the issue should be immediately addressed before something worst happens again.
Glenis Agard, an employee of the Guyana Power and Light Corporation, who had to abandon her home, said that her house at Richmond Housing Scheme was broken into six times. She said on those occasions the intruder, who is usually attired in dark clothing, stole her salary, foodstuff and clothing.
A former school teacher, who was physically attacked on four occasions, is nursing an injured leg.
