Yesterday I saw a man reading that day’s edition of the Kaieteur News. His attention was fixed on a headline that read “Guyana dying under the PPP- APNU-AFC.
I asked him what he thought about the headline. He replied, “I would rather die under the PPP, than live again under the PNC.”
“Why do you say that? “ I questioned.
His response was swift. He said, “I see life under the PPP. I may not have had everything that I wanted, but I achieved far more under the PPP than I could even dream of under the PNC. All the PNC ever gave me is punishment and humiliation. “
I pointed out to him that it has been more than twenty-two years since the PNC was in power. Most of the younger generation did not grow up under the PNC and therefore are not familiar with its record in power. “How then”, I asked “can the record of the PNC while in government be a factor in this year’s elections?”
He replied, “The generation that voted the PPP into office was not born during the violence of the 1960’s. Many of those who returned the PPP into office in 2006 and 2011 never knew about the banning of food items and the terrible hardships experienced under the PNC. Yet they voted for the PPP.”
“Are you then saying that this year’s elections are not going to be about the record of the PNC since the young people who comprise the majority of the electorate have no experience of the PNC in government?”
“I am not saying that at all. Are you going to buy pig in bag? Will you marry someone without checking their background? Would you not want to know that the person you are marrying is a serial killer or has had criminal convictions or is a pervert? Would you not want to know about the person you are marrying?”
“What is the point?” I asked.
He said, “The point is that you cannot vote for a party without knowing their background just as how you should not marry someone without knowing them.”
“But people change,” I said.
”Sure people change”, he said, “but if a man rob you one time; then he rob you a second time, then he rob you a third time, you still want to take a chance to lend that man money again simply because he says that he has changed. “
“But what about the corruption that it is said the PPP is engaged in?” I queried.
“The same people that talking about corruption had said that the National Stadium would become a financial burden on the economy and raise the country’s debt. The same people that talking about corruption said that the Marriott Hotel would not be built. The same people that talking about corruption had said that the Berbice River Bridge would not last long.
“All the things they said would happen have not happened. The same people that opposed the Anti-Money Laundering Bill are the same people that now saying when they get in they will pass the law. Why then they did not pass it before?”
“What about the distribution of radio and television licences? What about the sale of Sanata? What about the sale of drugs in the health sector?”I queried.
“What about them?” he retorted. “You think that things will be different if any other government gets in to power?”
I told him that I have to give that issue further thought.
