On Tuesday, the February-May session of the Essequibo Criminal Assizes opened with the observation of the traditional march past on the lawns of the Richard Fikhal Training College, at Suddie, Essequibo Coast.
Judge Sandra Kuritzious who would be presiding over 20 criminal cases for the February-May session, took the salute from Deputy Commander, Essy Stanton.
Cases to be heard include four murders, three attempted murders, 10 cases of rape of a child under 16 years, three cases of sexual activity committed with a family member.
Today, Queenstown labourer, William Johnson, who was charged with attempted murder and wounding with intent committed on his reputed wife, 36-year-old Liliwattie Dass two years ago, will commence at the Suddie High Court.
Johnson abducted his wife in January 2013 and took her to Queenstown backlands where he raped and then stabbed her five times about her body.
Liliwattie Dass was hospitalized.
Johnson was eventually captured by the police and charged.
