The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) has made it clear that its membership in A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) is not driven by a desire for power but by a desire to see the prosperity of Guyana as a country.
When APNU contested the 2011 elections, the Presidential Candidate was given to a member of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and the Prime Ministerial Candidacy came from the WPA.
But this time as a result of the “Pro-democracy alliance, APNU is heading to the polls with its Prime Ministerial Candidate coming from the Alliance For Change (AFC). That spot has been taken away from the WPA.
However, the party which has been struggling to have more meetings with APNU, is now saying that its priorities lie not with what it can get from the partnership but more about how the partnership can provide what is best for Guyana.
At Saturday’s press conference—which served to make the alliance between AFC and APNU known—Executive Member of the WPA, Tacuma Ogunseye told Kaieteur News that his Party has been associated with the pro-democracy talks from the very beginning.
He noted that the WPA was first represented in the discussions by Dr. Rupert Roopnarine. However, Dr. Roopnarine had to abort the talks after he was selected to be on a Commonwealth team to observe General elections in Nigeria.
Ogunseye said that he immediately replaced Dr. Roopnarine.
“I can assure the country that WPA had full participation in the process and we are satisfied that we made the necessary compromise in the interest of the county. The WPA is not too concerned with the fortunes of the alliance; we are concerned about the fortunes that are to come to the country through such an alliance.”
As for whether or not WPA will still have adequate representation in the National Assembly under a new government, APNU Leader, David Granger told the media that the coalition will have it no other way.
He pointed out that APNU has been in parliament over three years and has had representation from all five of its partners. Granger said that in this regard, the same rules from 2011 will be applied in 2015.
Granger committed that the WPA, PNC/R, the Guyana Action Party (GAP), the National Front Alliance (NFC), the Justice For All Party (JFAP) and of course the AFC, will all have adequate representation in the National Assembly under a new government.
Granger said that the Partnership is yet to get down to detailed negotiations as to which party will get what, but WPA will still have a voice as well as the other partners.
