The agonizing search for a 40-year-old fisherman ended in pain for his family on Sunday when his decomposed body was fished out of the Atlantic Ocean, in the vicinity of Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara.
The dead fisherman has been identified as Sadeia Sanchara, a father of four of Lot 176 Seawall Road, Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
His badly decomposed body was discovered 10 days after he allegedly fell from the fishing boat that was carrying him and five other crew members.
The fisherman reportedly fell overboard in the vicinity of Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
According to information reaching this newspaper, Sanchara’s co-workers informed his relatives that they were in the cabin of the vessel when the 40-year-old fisherman suffered a seizure and fell overboard.
Sanchara’s co-workers claimed that they jumped after him but because the water was too rough, they failed to locate him.
Yesterday, the dead man’s brother, Terry Sanchara, told this newspaper that they were informed around 15:00 hrs on Sunday that a body was found floating in the river in the vicinity of the cremation ground at Ruimzeight.
“When we went, the police had already moved the body and taken it to the Ezekiel Funeral home so we had to go there and identify it,” the sibling stated.
He explained that Sanchara’s body was beyond recognition.
“We identify him by his clothes. He was wearing a yellow trousers and a vest, and he was also wearing a black band on his right hand,” the dead man’s brother recalled.
The man said that because of the state of the body, he was unable to see the tattoos his brother had on his hand.
He explained that his sibling’s remains were in the final stages of decomposition.
Recalling what happened from the time his brother left home, Terry explained that approximately seven hours after his brother left home to go to the Meadow Bank Wharf to meet with his crew, they received a telephone call that the man had fallen overboard.
“We get the call that he catch fits and fall overboard. His co-workers say that they jump after he but didn’t find him,” Terry stated.
He added that when they received the tragic news, he along with other relatives went out into the rough and salty water with four boats to look for the father of four, but their searches proved futile.
The crew searched for four days.
