DEAR EDITOR,
It grieves me daily to know that the party I voted for in 1992, which promised to usher in a new era of a ‘lean, clean and mean government’, has failed us miserably. This slogan that was popular then is not only dead, but to even think that a new era would have brought accountability is a betrayal to our God-forsaken country.
I voted for Dr. Jagan in 1992 because I thought that he was robbed by the PNC for too long. In all honesty, I was flabbergasted and disgusted with myself when I listened to Dr. Jagan when he announced the appointment of his government ministers. Not only were many of them unqualified for their respective positions, many of them had no knowledge of running anything of substance in their life.
I knew then that Dr. Jagan and the PPP were not really interested in making Guyana prosperous, but in perpetuating a one-man rule system, and all decisions would continue to be made by the leader. Guyana, I believed then, and still believe today, is cursed. After his death, the party continues to rule our dear country in the same way – one-man decision.
The PPP leaders were able to continue with their ruthless action because they believe, and they still do, that their supporters are pawns. The PPP believes that they can do whatever they want to do, then go to the bottom houses across Guyana, and pull “wool” over the people’s eyes, reminding them that the PNC did the same things they are accusing us of doing, and let it be known that if the PNC gets back in office, they (supporters) will suffer more. These racist meetings continue to this day, and sadly, many Guyanese of Indian descent still believe these “blood-suckers” in the PPP.
As I look to Trinidad and Suriname, people of different races and ethnicity vote across racial lines, and elect different parties to office. When these parties fail to perform, they are voted out of office. The current state of affairs in Guyana is deeply embedded in the politics of Burnham and Jagan, who were each more interested in power than the prosperity of Guyana.
We can continue along this road, or we can wake up and send these wicked scum packing. It is up to the people of Guyana to make that choice.
I am appealing to the opposition to please get their houses in order, and have a united slate for the coming elections. They should also make public who among them are likely to be Government Ministers, members of the various Commissions, Boards of Directors, Regional Chairmen, REOs, Permanent Secretaries, and so on. If the majority of Guyanese supports these candidates for office, then we will surely have a new government on May 12th.
They must also be clear in their message that there will be no room for racial selection for any position, and if anyone in the new government is found guilty of doing that, there is a commitment to remove those people from office. We must start with a clean and clear state, and the objective of the new government has to be nation building, and nothing else.
I am confident that the Guyanese people will wake up and stand up for what is good, with the understanding that real change will finally come to our beloved land.
