Head Coach of the National football team Jamaal Shabazz said his players are eager to play for Guyana. He was speaking with Kaieteur Sport
yesterday afternoon after the team completed a pool session.
Guyana is scheduled to travel to Barbados for a friendly against the host nation on February 1 and Shabazz stated that the players are getting where he wants them to be. “Their efforts and enthusiasm have surpassed expectations and this makes it exciting for what the future holds,” he added.
Shabazz pointed out that the game will tell us just where we are. “Friendlies are to evaluate where we are and the game against Barbados will tell us just that,” said Shabazz.
The head coach explained that the pool training provided them with a good idea of where the players are in terms of fitness. “While their fitness is far from where we would like it to be, the Chinese say that a journey of a 1000 miles begins with one step. So we will to go to Barbados whether heavily armed or lightly equipped, give a total effort and put our trust in Allah and he will determine the results,” he informed.
Shabazz feels that there are tremendous talents in the squad. “I believe in the players’ ability to perform. Guyana have a bright future and I dream of brighter days,” said Shabazz.
Twenty-three year-old midfielder Bryden Caesar joined the squad two days ago from Canada and Shabazz believes he will add something to the progress going forward. When asked about how he felt about the passing of former Treasurer of the Guyana Football Federation, Aubrey Henry, Shabazz stated that Henry was a very committed soldier to Guyana’s football and a giant among Caribbean workers in the game.
”He leaves some huge shoes for others to fill and I know he was one of those who believe in one God. I pray that Allah will make his soul rest in peace,” Shabazz concluded.
