– in effort to end violence against women
Guyanese performing Group Y3K is set to represent this country and the Caribbean at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on February 7, on behalf of the international women’s advocacy group, One Billion Rising.
The local youth band has been featured at a number of events throughout the country and will be performing their original song “Revolution Girl” to an international audience as an “artistic rising of the revolution on violence against our women”.
According to Caribbean American Domestic Violence Awareness (CADVA), Y3K will be the only group representing the Caribbean at the One Billion Rising New York event.
One Billion Rising is a global campaign which aims to end violence against women through artistic expression, and has been in existence since 2012.
The campaign also received tremendous support from the late Dr Faith Harding, the decorated Guyanese children’s psychiatrist and former Minister Government who passed away this past Friday.
Taiesha Cox, a singer in the music group, expressed grief at the loss of a woman who encouraged the group to continue what they love doing.
The seven-person group has been performing for as long as Cox can remember and receiving such sustained encouragement from the renowned Guyanese activist provided the support they needed.
The young performer related her enthusiasm for the upcoming performance. When asked to describe her excitement for the event, Cox said that “Excitement is an understatement and I am just really happy to represent the Caribbean at such a special event.”
