The Roadside Baptist Skills Training Centre (RBSTC) of Number 68 Village, Corentyne, yesterday commissioned a $1.2M recreational park at Block 19, Line Path, Corriverton, Corentyne.
The park is equipped with slides and other facilities, as well as a benab and shed for senior citizens. The park was a charter project of the Rotary Club of Corriverton in 1993. It was left in a run-down state after being handed over by the Club to a community group. It was later that the RBSTC took the challenge to bring back the park to some semblance of decency. Immediate intervention and lobbying for funds and resources came into effect by the CEO of RBSTC, Mrs. Yetrawattie ‘Naline’ Katryan, as well as the Upper Corentyne Chambers of Commerce (UCCCI).
Pastor Almond Katryan, in giving an overview of the project, stated that $1M was received from the Region Six Administration. In 2014, the centre was able to accomplish the task with the help of a contractor. To get the park and its surroundings in shape, the Skeldon Sugar Estate, he said, responded favourably to the call of the centre.
Deputy Regional Executive Officer of Region Six, Mr. Imran Ally, in delivering brief remarks, lauded the organizers for catering not only for the young and physically-abled, but also for senior citizens as well, through the construction of a shed with benches for relaxation.
“The RDC is pleased to be associated with this ceremony,” he added. He alluded to the Region Six Administration’s Public Works Department’s expenditure of over $52M in refurbishing numerous sports and recreational grounds across the region. Fifty community grounds in the region benefitted from developmental works.
Representing the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports was the Director of Youth, Ms. Yvonne Arthur, who delivered the feature address. She outlined the various ways in which youths in Berbice can be involved in the activities of the Ministry, including joining its School of Dance in Georgetown and registering to join the activities of the President’s Youth Award Programme (PYAP). A youth camp is being planned from Feb. 12-14, 2015, in Berbice, and this will be held at the PYAR building at Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam. Arthur extended an invitation to the youths present as well as members of RBSTC.
Additionally, a training programme within the Volunteerism Programme Platform will be conducted at that centre. Four youths from the region between ages 14 and 16 can enlist.
She urged the youths of the Skeldon High School who were present at the event to get to know the Regional Youth Officer in Region Six, Mr. Omeshwar Srikishun.
The Recreational Park’s affairs will be dealt with by a Management Committee with its members Pastor Mukesh Rossick, Sean Sunthgolam, Pradeep Ketwaroo, and Kesho Sookraj. Also present at yesterday’s commissioning were Past President of the UCCCI, Mr. Krishnand Jaichand and Ms. Andrea Hall, Social Worker attached to Region Four. Chairing the programme was religious leader Mr. Bhawase Harripaul, member of the Region 6 Education Committee and IMC Corriverton Chairman.
