Dear Editor,
The New Year is not yet a month old but already 2015 appears headed for the unflattering description of Guyanese as “being good at being bad”.
The prevailing atmosphere has already cast a dark shadow of doom and gloom over the dreams, hopes and wishes for positive changes which are typically associated with the dawn of a New Year.
The euphoria generated by the President’s anxiously awaited announcement of an Elections date has already evaporated as it quickly became clear that the May 11th date clashes with important examinations schedules for schools, which are usually used as Polling Places and teachers, many of whom usually function as Polling day officials. The nightmare of imagined inconveniences arising from this apparent faux pas came on the heels of wrangling concerning the legal, constitutional and conventional format and sequence of events involving the dissolution of Parliament and setting of the polling date etc.
These apparent mis-steps add to other areas of confusion, deficiency, mismanagement, underperformance and indifference; just to name the more obvious to me:
• The current shemozzle involving the anticipated funds from the ABC and EU countries;
• The GGMC strike which continues ad infinitum;
• The threat of strike at UG which must be disorienting and disconcerting for the current cohort of young and mature students as well as their parents:
• The war of words about the past, present and future of GUYSUCO is doing little, if anything, to allay the chronic doubts and fears that have been hovering over the heads of its many stakeholders, especially its 16000 employees and their families; and now the recent disclosure of GUYSUCO’s failure to remit monies deducted from employees for their NIS benefits;
• The spate of road accidents, murder, robberies and other crimes show no sign of abating; and we can go on and on with other examples of ‘badness’.
Ordinary citizens like me wonder if the world sees us as masochists who take delight in being seen as people who are very good at being bad and even getting better at being ‘badder’!
What is the smart thing to do in such widespread confusion and misfortunes?
The time is ripe for us Guyanese to ask ourselves and our leaders the hard questions and to discuss how best we can work together to get ourselves out of the apparent rut so that we can again look forward to brighter days ahead. Other nations similarly placed have already demonstrated what has and can be done; we can at least learn from them!
