Twenty years ago, the Mayor’s Cup Football Championships joined an illustrious group of tournaments on the local sports calendar and since then, has earned its place as one of the eagerly awaited yearly events.
Organizers are now putting the modalities in place for the 21st edition of the tournament, three weeks of solid action, from Friday January 30 – Saturday February 22 next, when footballers from the nation’s best teams battle for supremacy. The organizing committee will kick off activities when they convene at the Mayor’s Office, Avenue of the Republic on Tuesday, January 22 for the official launch of the tournament as 11:00hrs sharp.
Coordinator of activities, Lennox Arthur said that all systems are in place and fans could look forward to the usual excitement associated with the tournament over the years. He informed that the prizes are lucrative with the winning team pocketing one million dollars. The runners up will win $300,000 while the 3rd and 4th places will win $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Club administrators are reminded that they could register a maximum of 22 players, four of whom could be guest players. However, these players cannot be drawn from competing teams. The tournament is being conducted under the auspices of the Guyana Football Federation and all rules are applicable.
Meanwhile, when the action gets underway on January 30, Golden Grove will play Grove Hi Tech in the first of two fixtures slated for the Victoria Ground ECD starting at 19:00hrs. Two hours later, Victoria Kings will battle with Agricola. The next fixture will be played at Number 5 West Berbice one day later when Rosignol United play Cougars and Monedderlust go up against New Amsterdam United.
Other teams vying for championship honours are Santos, Ann’s Grove, Camptown, Mahaica, Pouderoyen, Police, GDF, Rhythm Squad, Fruta Conquerors, Pele, Slingerz, Den Amstel, Alpha, and Western Tigers.
Meanwhile, Mr. Arthur has assured that the winner will receive a healthy cheque, the same as the 2nd to 4th place finishers. However, he said that he is appealing to members of the corporate community to render the usual support in order to retain the rich vein of rivalry synonymous with the championships.
