They’ve witnessed the success of the Georgetown, Linden and East Coast of Demerara Zone tournaments, but were never presented the opportunity
to be part of the national playoffs. However, that is about to change when the inaugural Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ West Demerara edition kicks off tomorrow with eight matches, at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, commencing from 19:00 hrs.
Yesterday in the Boardroom of Banks DIH, the tournament was officially launched and in attendance at the occasion was Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste, Communications Manager Troy Peters, Tournament Coordinator Travis Bess, referees coordinator Wayne Griffith and players from the respective teams.
Sixteen (16) will participate in the tournament with four allotted to four groups that play in a round robin phase, before entering into a knockout segment following the progression of the top two teams from each group.
Group ‘A’ consists of Golden Stars, Brothers United, DeKinderen United and Vergenoegen, while Patentia Street Ballers, Raiders, Majie Street and Demerara Speedboat Service comprise Group ‘B’.
Group ‘C’ features Young Warriors, Jetty, West Side Ballers and Pouderoyen Showstoppers, while Group ‘D’ contains Admiral United, Den Amstel, Uitvlugt and Showtime. The winning team will receive $300,000 and the championship trophy, runner-up $150,000, 3rd place $100,000 and 4th place- $75,000.
The scheduled playing dates are January 24th, 27th, 29th, 31st, February 3rd and 7th, while the other match venue is the Vergenoegen Rice Mill Tarmac. Baptiste speaking at the launching said the Company under the Guinness Brand has made good on its promise to expand the tournament assuring West Side fans that it was always the intention of the entity to host a tournament there.
He added that the tournament gives football fans and players the avenue through the community based initiative to participate. Lee extended gratitude to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony for his support over the years, adding that because of previous success at all the other locations he is optimistic that the upcoming event will mirror that of previous tournaments held elsewhere.
Peters during brief opening remarks said “Guinness is with you in 2015 and you have the opportunity like every other team in Guyana to compete and possibly represent Guyana”
Bess in his presentation told the media that from early feedback the teams and the respective communities are all happy that the competition has finally come to the West Side and they are anxiously awaiting the start.
There will be a Fair Play prize which is worth $50,000, while the top two finishers will advance to the national playoffs.
