Though the Alliance for Change (AFC) welcomes the recently announced election date of May 11, it is now making an urgent call to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to publish guidelines against the abuse of state resources.
The AFC and the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have been in campaign mode since last year. Both have been highlighting what it believes to be the abuse of state resources during government’s election campaign around the country.
The AFC said via a missive yesterday that the release of the date for new General and Regional Elections can be seen as the beginning of a victory of pro-democracy forces in Guyana.
The Opposition party said that President Donald Ramotar has finally buckled to criticisms that his prorogation of Parliament in the face of AFC’s No Confidence Motion was reckless, and had placed parliamentary democracy in danger.
The prorogation it reminded, attracted wide condemnation in Guyana, and pressures from friendly states, with indications that sanctions could follow.
The AFC however, emphasized that it is concerned that the minority regime would continue to spend public funds for since August 10, 2014, there has and continues to be, an uninterrupted period without parliamentary approval or scrutiny.
It believes that there are justifiable fears that the regime would continue to abuse funds from the national purse for the PPP elections campaign, as well as other state resources, including the media and vehicles.
Notwithstanding these concerns, the Party reiterated that now that a date for elections has been set, the AFC is the most vibrant fighting force in Guyana and remains ever confident in bringing change on May 11.
