Following the death of her father by a speeding car weeks ago, Shareema Azab, of Diamond New Scheme, East
Bank Demerara is calling on the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to investigate why the driver of the vehicle was never charged, although the police claimed they had sent the file to the DPP’s office for recommendation.
The mother of two is demanding justice for her father, Abdul Azab Hamied, 54, of Lot 4, Friendship, East Bank Demerara who was killed on January 5, 2015 while crossing the Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Reports are, a motor vehicle bearing the licence plate number PCC 9494 struck him.
The man was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. The driver of the vehicle was released on bail after being taken into custody.
“I received a call at around 20:30hrs Monday night and I came out to the hospital and I see them trying to save he life…I was feeling bad and I went home and at 22:00hrs I got a call saying my father died. They say he died as a result of a fractured skull and spine injury.”
She explained that the driver was reportedly placed on $100,000 bail and it appears that the vehicle was returned to the owner as it is no longer in the police station’s compound.
Underscoring that the Police seem to be keeping information from her, Azab said “all they telling me is that the matter will go through the court and the file got to be looked at by the DPP. My father didn’t deserve to die. Not like that.”
Azab noted that the persons responsible for her father’s death never contacted her or any other family member to offer their condolences or any form of compensation.
“My father didn’t have much. He was a farmer and he used to live by himself….It’s me and my sister from New Jersey had to pool money for the funeral. They couldn’t even offer to help. It’s not like we want it or anything, but they just don’t seem like they care what they did,” the daughter emphasised.
She said that an eyewitness had related to her that a woman was driving the car but police inquiry revealed the driver was a male.
“I was told that the woman who was driving does not own a valid driver’s licence; therefore, the man took responsibility for the woman’s accident…The last time I see he (my father) was on Christmas Day. Like I still feel he is here, like sometimes I does go to pick up the phone to call him but then I remember he’s dead.” She further lamented.
