Guyana re-established itself on the world stage when their men’s team captured the three-hand title at the 16th World Council Dominoes Federation (WCDF) championships which was held in Barbados in August.
After withstanding stiff challenges from their opponents, the Guyanese team ended with 14 points followed by Antigua & Barbuda on 13.5 and host Barbados on 12. Martin Permaul, Godfrey Samuels and Kevin Boston were the most outstanding players for the champions. The females also gave a good account of themselves, they won their final round game, but had to settle for third position as they started the round on 10 points, two behind eventual champions Antigua & Barbuda and three behind Barbados who edged the Guyanese on sixes to take the runner-up spot.
The main reason the Guyanese triumphed on the international stage was due to the fact the many competitions were played locally thanks to the Georgetown Dominoes Association (GDA). The competitions were keenly contested and TNT emerged as the most decorated team, bagging three titles. The Cuffy Memorial tournament was the first in 2014. After battling in the preliminary rounds, Delta Force, Arsenal and C7 qualified for the playoffs at Channel Nine. Delta Force held their nerves to emerge as champions.
C7 rebounded to win the Mark Wiltshire competition. F and H placed second and Pacesetters third. Delta Force then copped the Robert Williams Memorial title with victories over Spartons and Pacesetters respectively.
Mix Up was the next champion, winning La Belle Hotel and Bar title ahead of Providence and Police in that order. Mark Wiltshire and Godfrey Mendonca were the leading players. Secretary of the GDA, Wiltshire, then organized the champion of champions’ tournament which featured all top teams affiliated to the GDA.
It was in this contest TNT announced their presence. Led by outstanding performances from Sonia Goodluck, Shawn Morgan, they overcame Providence who placed second and Spartons (third) in the final. Mix Up grabbed their second title of the year by winning the Deon Carter competition; Providence finished second and Pacesetters third.
TNT wasted little time in getting back into the spotlight; they triumphed in the next competition which was sponsored by David Hunte. Thunder took the runner up spot ahead of Mix Up. President of the GDA Faye Joseph then came on board by sponsoring the Orin Joseph (former GDA president) Memorial tournament. Scramblers took that title while TNT placed second and Pacesetters third. TNT finished the year in fine fashion by pocketing the Faye Joseph title ahead of Mix Up and Blue Bird third in that order.
Among other players that performed well in 2014 are Joseph, Wiltshire, Kanhai Samaroo, Clarence Whitehead, Trevor Smith, Jane Chase, Colin Thomas, Tony Smith, Cargail DeFreitas, Hazim Hakh, Samantha Vickery, Junior Smith and Shawn Davis.
