Knowledge is never too much and many have attested to the benefits derived, sometimes at the most inopportune time after its acquisition. And so it was that despite his vast repertoire of knowledge that has been the catalyst to Alpha’s number one position locally, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover insatiable appetite led him to expand on that knowledge. Consequently, he left Guyana last Tuesday morning to attend a 5 days educational event under the auspices of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in partnership with the World Football Academy.
Activities commenced at the Philadelphia Convention Centre, one day after Dover arrived in the American state and Kaieteur Sport has been keeping abreast of developments. We caught up with Dover yesterday afternoon during a break in activities and moments after he had attended a promotional event where Edson Arantes do Nascimento aka Pele had endorsed a piece of gear, the G form shin guard, worn by Brazlian superstar footballer, Neymar (jnr).
Mr. Dover said that while he relished the experience, he noted several similarities to previous courses he had attended in other countries, under the auspices of CONCACAF. He said that over 4000 persons are attending the forum from a vast number of countries and the experience could only serve him for the better.
The Alpha coach further said that several football notables from around the world are in attendance and are simultaneously facilitating seminars on varying topics. “You are free to choose the topic most relevant to your needs and I have been very careful to choose those topics that are relevant to Guyana’s football,” said Dover.
He said that the main thrust of the forum is to expose young coaches to the basic aspects of the trade so that they may expand their knowledge base to benefit players of their respective territories.
He said that he was especially interested in the part of the session that required analysis of games where coaches viewed games and discussed strategic perspectives. “This session was facilitated by Bert Leonard of Real Madrid and tested the skill and intelligence of coaches pertaining to the finer aspects of the game,” revealed Dover. Several other football greats were also in attendance and spoke on varying issues of the sport.
Mr. Dover said that he found the sessions enlightening and very educational. He said that among the topics dealt with are Laws of the Game, Marketing and Administration and Nutrition and Injuries among others.
Shortly before leaving Guyana, Mr. Dover had expressed delight at the opportunity to enhance his knowledge base. He had also said that he intends to soak up as much information as possible for his benefit as well as his fellow coaches unable to attend. “I plan to use the knowledge and ideas procured from this forum to enhance local football development,” he had promised.
Meanwhile, a website detailing the particulars of the convention informs that the attendees will have the opportunity to learn from Raymond Verheijen and the World Football Academy. Some of the topics will focus on Principles of Football Periodization, Principles of Football Psychology and Principles of Football Tactics among others.
Mr. Dover has extended gratitude to members of the corporate community who have contributed towards his airfare, accommodation and other necessities. He said that most of the contributing businesses preferred anonymity which restricts him from disclosure. “Nonetheless, they know themselves and I’d wish to express profound gratitude to them for their generosity,” said Dover.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
