Defending champions New Amsterdam Warriors made sure that their win in the inaugural Banks DIH Classic Basketball Competition was no fluke when the defeated old foe Smythfield Rockers in the final to win the 2014 edition of the competition.
The two teams from New Amsterdam entered the competition as favourites and lived up to expectation as they clashed in the finals.
In the end it was the Warriors were more prepared for battle as they never allowed the Rockers to settle, destroying them 41-32.
The Warriors took the lead from the start and only relinquished it briefly during the match. They led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors increased the pressure which saw them creating a further advantage 22-15. The Rockers were able to show some amount of fight in the third segment as the held the Warriors to a 29-21 lead.
The anticipated battle in final segment never materialized. It was the Warriors unit that were ready as they pulled away for the eventual 41-32 victory.
Outstanding for the New Amsterdam were Leroy Edwards with 12 points, Randy Caesar with 10 points and Carlos Crandon with 8.
Michael Bowen led the fight for the Smythfield Rockers with 9 points, while Neil Wills netted five.
Randy Caesar was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
The winning team was presented with the beautiful Banks DIH Trophy by Banks’ Berbice Branch Sales Manager Joshua Torrezao. Second placed Smythfield Rockers also collected a trophy compliment of the sponsors.
Torrezao congratulated the two teams for a very good match. He also congratulated all the teams that participated the competition. He stated that sponsoring the basketball tournament was just one part in the company’s motto of being a good cooperate citizen and giving back to the community.
Torrezao noted that the company has good things in store for basketball in Berbice and promised to sponsor the competition in a bigger and better way in the future.
The tournament was organized and coordinated by sports enthusiast Vibert Garrett. Garrett thanked Banks DIH and wished them further success. He called on other companies to come forward and play their part. (Samuel Whyte)
