To ensure consumer safety and protection, the Government Analyst/Food and Drug Department of the Ministry of Health, is reminding importers, retailers and wholesalers of food and raw materials used in manufacturing that they should register with the department and obtain an import permit for the current year before March 31.
The department has advised that an Import Permit is issued when several requirements are satisfied. According to the Department, the requirements for licensing include the following:
i: An importer, retailer or wholesalers of and raw materials must provide a suitable, register premises for holding and storing products. The premises should be of adequate size and be properly lighted and ventilated.
ii: He or She should provide air conditioning, refrigeration, and freezing facilities for sensitive foods such as dairy products, preserved vacuum packaged meat products, chocolates and other confectionary.
iii: Labels should comply with the labelling requirements as set out in Section 8 of the Food & Drugs Regulations No.10 of 1977.
iv: All foods sold on the domestic markets should be labelled in English. It is the onus of Importers to ensure that official English translations are provided for and affixed to foods labelled in foreign language.
v: All products arriving in the country must have a minimum of 75% of the stated shelf life at the time of entry.
vi: Satisfactory records with respect of origin of products, names and addresses of suppliers, distribution points and recall of the products should be kept.
vii: A certificate of analysis, endorsed by the Regulatory Authority of the country of origin, must accompany each consignment.
The Department reminded that all relevant customs document must be submitted for examination before the consignments are released through the Customs and Trade Administration.
The full cooperation from Importers, the body said, is expected in the interest of consumer safety and protection.
