…offers to replace wrecked police vehicle
The drunken businessman who around 23:30 hrs on Wednesday evening crashed into a road block, damaging a police car and injuring a young police constable is now offering to replace or repair the vehicle.
But the cops are telling him that it’s not so easy. There are certain procedures that have to be undertaken. The injured policeman was sitting in the vehicle.
The police had responded to a report of armed robbery at a No 62 Village, Corentyne, Berbice residence.
A group of police in full uniform including Commander of ‘B’ Division, Brian Joseph, Officer in Charge of Crime, Superintendent Terrance Paul and Assistant Superintendents Terrence Brown and Alonzo, and Cadet Officer Jermaine Dufu and others had mounted a road block on the No. 63 Public Road.
Shortly before midnight, despite the heavy police presence and the flashing lights and signals, vehicle number GNN 3084, driven by 58-year-old businessman Uraj Sourujbali, of No 72 Village, Corentyne, came speeding along and ploughed through the road block. It came to a halt by smashing into police car PSS 4458 which was parked at the side of the road. Police constable Roy George suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Skeldon Hospital where he was treated and sent away.
The police vehicle was severely damaged.
Sourujbali, when he emerged from the vehicle, could hardly steady himself. He was found to be way over the legal limit of alcohol consumption (175 micrograms).
He was subsequently charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court and was fined $7,500 on the drunk driving charge.
The man had told investigators that he had fallen asleep and thought that the flashing light and heavy police presence were part of his dreams.
He has since offered to repair or replace the damaged police vehicle and pay compensation, but may first have to face the consequences for his indiscretion. He has since been released on bail and is expected to face further charges during the week.
