A porkknocker accused of stabbing a 50-year-old miner to death on New Year’s Day, because the man objected to squibs being thrown into his yard, has been remanded to prison on a murder charge.
Rochino Maison, 19, of Old Kara Kara, McKenzie, Linden, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Wednesday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was arraigned.
Maison is charged with murdering Andre Britton on January 1, 2015, at 111 Miles, Mahdia, Potaro. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Maison was unrepresented by legal counsel and no details into the incident were presented to the Court by Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant. At the end of the brief hearing, the Chief Magistrate remanded Maison to prison and transferred the case to the Mahdia Magistrates’ Court for January 19.
According to reports, Britton, a father of five, stopped four teenagers from throwing squibs into his yard, and at people, on Old Year’s Night. He was later stabbed to his neck and abdomen, on New Year’s Day, by one of the young men.
Britton was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahdia Hospital. Maison was arrested and later charged with murder.
