A Jamaican national who was on Monday nabbed with over 100 pellets of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan
International Airport (CJIA) Timehri, appeared in court on Wednesday, and was indicted on a drug trafficking charge.
Richard Daniels, 20, was allegedly found with 1.236 kilograms of cocaine concealed in two bottles of lotion and two and a half pairs of socks on January 5, last.
Daniels was brought to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for his first arraignment.
When the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking was read to Daniels, he pleaded not guilty and submitted a bail application through his lawyer, but the court presided over by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry ordered him held until January 20.
Daniels’ case was prosecuted by Police Inspector, Michael Grant who explained that the 20-year-old was an outgoing passenger on Fly Jamaica flight OJ155 destined for Kingston, Jamaica.
Grant explained that about 22:05 hours Monday night, a party of police ranks headed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Singh was conducting a Narcotics Eradication Exercise at the airport.
According to the Prosecutor, ASP Singh noticed Daniels acting in a suspicious manner and approached him. After making a request, Singh searched Daniels’ suitcase. Grant said that 105 pellet-shaped objects, wrapped in silver paper foil, was found stashed in two bottles of lotion and two and a half pairs of socks.
Subsequently, a field test was conducted at CJIA which proved that the pellet-shaped objects were cocaine. Daniels was told of the offence and taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) where the illicit substance was weighed. He was subsequently charged with drug trafficking
Daniels was represented by Defence Attorney Peter Hugh. Bail was objected to by the Prosecutor due to the nature and gravity of the offence. In his objections, Grant opined that Daniels was a flight risk who would not return for trial, and added that for bail to be granted, special reasons must be advanced.
Daniels was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance on January 20 before Magistrate Ann McLennan for report.
