Oswin Tappin, a survivor of Tuesday’s Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, road accident, which claimed the life of security guard, Lynette Joseph, recounted the reckless driving of the bus driver.
While in the care of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporate (GPHC), Tappin related the hair-raising speed of the vehicle along the East Bank Demerara Highway.
“It was a dangerous way of driving,” said Tappin, who, at the time when he spoke to this publication, was in immense pain from the accident.
The still distraught survivor said that he could not believe any driver would be allowed to drive so recklessly on any roadway. Tappin had migrated to the island of Antigua some years ago, and is also a driver by profession.
Recounting the moments leading up to the accident, the 58-year-old said that what stood out to him the most about the driving, were the sharp swerves the driver made along the highway. This, he said, had him praying to reach his destination safely.
He recalled seeing the security guard sitting a couple seats ahead of him. He said that her mangled body deeply disturbed him when he saw it in the wreckage. Joseph was reportedly, sitting next to the conductor of the minibus when the accident occurred.
Tappin was still clearly shaken up at what he witnessed, and he was in a temporary state of paralysis.
“Speaking as a professional driver, when you invest millions of dollars in a vehicle you have a responsibility to drive carefully,” said Tappin, “especially when the lives of others are involved.”
It was only earlier that very Tuesday morning that Tappin was travelling in another minibus along the East Coast Demerara Public Road, when that driver also had him clutching his seat due to the reckless manner of his driving.
