A Hackney Canal man almost lost his eye after he attempted to open a pressure cooker without releasing all the steam. Lloyd Damon sustained injuries to his left eye.
Damon’s neighbour, Ann Garraway, said that Damon and his two younger brothers were at their Hackney Canal, Lower Pomeroon home cooking rice in a pressure cooker.
Garraway added that Damon didn’t hear the sound of the pressure which indicated that the rice was cooking so he went to check the pot. After he attempted to open the cooker without allowing the steam to subside the pot exploded.
“I was at home when I heard the loud explosion but I thought it was a squib.” Damon received severe burns to his left eye and abdomen.
Garraway explained that the injured young man was rushed to the Oscar Joseph Hospital at Charity, where doctors managed to save his injured left eye.
Doctors told Damon’s family that they were able to avoid serious damages to his left eye because of the fact that he sought immediate medical attention.
