Dear Editor,
I note a recent article “Small miners call for more fiscal benefits as gold loses its sheen” where the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) was again calling for additional support from the Government.
After perusing the article, I noticed that the GGDMA was calling for changes to key mining policies for more fiscal benefits. However, I wish to point out that as a concerned small miner, I am aware of many instances where the GGDMA participated and contributed to the development of the very same policies they are now calling to be changed.
The GGDMA cannot be part of developing policies as a major stakeholder then wake up some mornings after to criticize it. This is a perfect example of how two-faced the GGDMA can be. No wonder I and many other small miners never considered joining the Association. The Association is only looking out for big miners. I challenge the Association to make any specific reference where they intervene to assist small miners.
Notwithstanding the challenges of the global drop in price for gold, miners still find gold lucrative and very profitable. Despite this, the Association and big miners still moan and cry while they continue to invest and diversify in other sectors. If not all, most of the Executive Members of the GGDMA continue to expand or diversify their mining operations without suffering any major losses. However, the small miners are the ones struggling, but still surviving with the current global prices.
Further, the Association distastefully singled out large mining companies for benefitting from an investment mechanism which was instituted to encourage investment and create employment for thousands of Guyanese. Of recent the Association is more and more sounding like a prophet of doom.
With this in mind, I would prefer that the Association encourages small miners and work with the government and large mining companies rather than paint the picture of a gloomy road ahead. To date, gold mining has been my only source of income and I have never found myself making a loss, despite the ups and downs. Gold is profitable and will continue to be.
