Patrick D’Almada, Canadian Lifesaving Society Instructor/Trainer based in Toronto along with Stuart Fraser from the Jamaican Lifesaving Society – who are both Guyanese born, will be in Guyana from February 14 -20, to complete training and examination of Lifeguards locally.
According to the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) both Trainers will be giving their services free of cost and participants will only have to pay for their certificates and manuals. The pair will also give guidance on the formation of the Guyana Lifesaving Association.
The Lifesaving Society also known as “The Lifesaving Experts” is a national voluntary and charitable organisation which works to prevent drowning and water related injuries through its lifesaving, lifeguarding and leadership training programmes and Water Smart public education activities.
The first Lifesaving/Lifeguarding certification Course was done in February 2013 in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Canadian Lifesaving Society. A total of 15 persons participated.
Six gained their International Lifeguard certification status, while nine gained their Bronze Medallion and/or Bronze Cross certification. Ewin Enmore, Stephanie Fraser, Avinash Ramraj, Niall Roberts, Tatiana Woodroffe, Damien Pilgrim and Morgan Richards were the local lifeguards certified by the Canadian Lifesaving Society and will be conducting training sessions at the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal on Tuesdays, Thursdays (6.00 – 8.00pm) and Saturdays (4.00 – 6.00pm) for this year’s participants towards the Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross courses in preparation for examination by D’Almada. The eight others gained Bronze medallion and Bronze Cross certification only.
