Charges are likely to be instituted against a Police Constable, who according to sources, mistakenly shot himself on New Year’s Day and then concocted a story of coming under fire, to his colleagues.
The cop, Salim Mohamed of Vergenoegen, West Coast Demerara (WCD), who was stationed at La Grange Police Station on the West Bank Demerara (WBD), sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot.
He was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and sent away.
A police source told this newspaper that the injured cop informed them that he was standing close to the Public Road at Vergenoegen, when a motor vehicle with heavily tinted windows drove by and fired several shots at him.
However, the source, who is close to the investigation, said that when they went into the area to investigate their colleague’s story, they were given another version of what transpired on that day.
“We heard that Salim and another policeman were firing shots on New Year’s Day and Salim mistakenly shot himself to the foot,” the police source said.
He also added that the positioning of Mohamed’s wound does not support his story.
“He was shot from top to bottom. It is impossible for him to be wounded like that by persons in a passing vehicle. He either sustained his injury by shooting himself, or someone who was standing very close to him, shot him,” the police source said.
Meanwhile, when this newspaper contacted the injured cop yesterday, he said that the story he told investigators is what really transpired on that day.
“I did not make up any story. People are just making false allegations. I can’t believe this is happening,” the shot cop said.
He added that he has no enemies and has no idea who would what to open fire on him.
“I will find out who shot me because words get around. The police are not doing anything. They are not trying to find out who shot me, they are busy making allegations against me,” Mohamed said.
He had earlier told this newspaper that when he was shot, he was not immediately conscious of what had transpired.
“It was New Year’s Day and squibs were going off and so it sounded like squibs …,” the cop said.
He added that, “I felt my leg grow numb and I kind of collapsed to the ground… I looked up and saw a white motorcar with heavily tinted windows speeding off in the direction of Parika…but I didn’t see the licence plate.”
Salim said that after realizing that he was shot, a friend, who was nearby, came to his rescue. He summoned a taxi which transported the policeman to the hospital.
“My friend helped me and I got my mother and came to the hospital immediately,” he had said to this newspaper.
Investigations are ongoing.
