Twenty-year-old miner Alex Higgins appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court
to face a manslaughter charge yesterday.
Higgins allegedly stabbed another miner, Devon Fraser to death at Konawaruk, Potaro last Saturday. The miner, who was unrepresented, made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
He was not required to plead to the charge since it was laid indictably.
The accused, clad in a blue and white polo shirt and a pair of shorts, was assisted into the courtroom since his left leg was in a cast. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant informed that Higgins had been chopped by residents from a nearby community in relation to another incident.
Higgins, the court heard, resides at Lot 542 ‘D’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
Grant objected to bail, citing the nature and seriousness of the offence. He said that Higgins was charged based on a confession statement where he said that Fraser attacked him and he defended himself.
According to Grant, through police investigations it was revealed by eyewitnesses that it was the accused who attacked the victim.
The Prosecutor added that once statements are garnered, a charge of murder is likely to be instituted against Higgins. Grant said too, that advice was already sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the matter.
Even though manslaughter is a bailable offence, the Chief Magistrate denied the accused his pre-trial liberty. The matter was made returnable for January 19, a time the Chief Magistrate instructed that Higgins can use to renew his bail application.
Reports are that about 23:45 hours on Christmas Eve Day (December 24) 26-year-old Fraser of Golden Fleece, West Coast Berbice, was involved in an altercation with Higgins during which he was stabbed about the body.
In a release, the police said that both men suffered injuries and were admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Fraser succumbed at about 01:30 hours on December 27.
