He is a proficient 2nd degree Black Belt martial artist and just seven months ago, Max Massiah
ventured into television broadcasting and launched ‘Maximum Sports.’ He is ably assisted by Patrick Chanderbhan on the one hour programme, broadcast on National Communication Network, Channel 11 (Channel 15 in Berbice) on Fridays at 21:00hrs and aims to promote the various combat and strength sports disciplines thus creating awareness and appreciation for them.
Now seven months and thirty one editions later, Mr. Massiah reflects on the benefits derived from the programme, while setting the tone for the succeeding year. He gushes with pride while disclosing that though he operates on a meagre budget, he has been able to host all of the disciplines under whose purview the programme transmits.
“My initial aim was to create a platform where the principals of each discipline could have graced the show and highlight the pros and cons of their area, create a high interest level while simplifying the intricacies of the sport for the uninitiated,” explained Mr Massiah during an informal chat with Kaieteur Sport. He said that he was concerned that the Guyanese sports public was not aware of these intricacies and such ignorance impacted poorly on the development of the disciplines.
To this extent, Maximum Sports has entertained the presence of several high profiled individuals from the various disciplines including the highly renowned Master Frank Woon-a-Tai, Chairman of the International Karate Daigaku, Mr Universe, Hugh Ross, world rated boxer, Clive Atwell and Professional USA Bodybuilder, Jeff Beckham among others. The programme has also hosted representatives from the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Guyana Karate College, Mix Martial Arts Association, Flex Night Inc, Guyana Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, Guyana Boxing Association, the Guyana Rugby Football Union, the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation and the Jaguar School of Combat among other entities.
As the new year dawns, Max, as he is familiarly called, plans to host the chief instructors of the many martial arts schools to add their voices to the debate that the sport is indeed one that can be considered a microcosm of life. This programme will be aired tomorrow night and Max advises his viewers to be at their television sets to gather a pictorial and verbal perspective of the noble sport.
He wishes to thank the ardent viewers who, over the months, have tuned in to the programme and at times called in to express their views or seek clarity on issues. Max is also grateful to members of the corporate community that has contributed by way of sponsorship. “This is the oxygen of the programmes and I would be erring if I ignore such input,” he said.
Those sponsors/entities include Caricom Group of Companies, Fitness Express, Terminex Pest Control, Marics and Company Ltd (Jailing), Jermin’s Enterprise, Comfort Sleep, Ganesh Parts and General Store, Guyana Karate College, Interline Fitness Gym, West Indian Sports Complex, Evil Eyes Electronics and General Merchandise, Gordon’s Stationery and Copy Centre, A Ally and Sons and Demerara Bank Ltd.
