While most people would prefer to spend the Christmas holidays at home with their friends and family, 52-year-old Latchmie Baburam is not sure where or how she will be spending Christmas Day.
Baburam, proprietor of the Lahago Supercenter in Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was shot to her right thigh two Tuesdays ago when two bandits entered the establishment.
The gunmen who were later identified as fugitive cop, Warren Anthony Blue, and computer scientist, Mahendra Sukull were later killed during a shootout with police in front of Baburam’s business place.
During a recent interview with the businesswoman at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), she said that like any other day, she and her daughter were inside the establishment along with customers.
According to Baburam, both bandits entered her business place and demanded money. The woman said that Sukull was very harsh and aggressive. She said, “(Sukull) had a gun in his hand and he was prepared to kill. He pushed away my daughter and a customer.”
She added, “No matter how good your face is, once you take a gun in your hand, you’ve become a criminal.”
The businesswoman said that she was informed that while the two gunmen were in her store, two other men were outside waiting in a car.
“After they robbed me and run out. One of the bandits (Blue) run and throw the money in the waiting car but the other guys didn’t wait on him, they collected the money and drive away, that is how he get shoot,” the businesswoman said.
Sukull’s involvement in the crime and subsequent death came as a shock to many of his friends who are at a loss why someone who had a potentially great career ahead of him would venture into armed robbery.
According to reports, Sukull came from a decent family and attended private school all the way up to the secondary level. He then gained a Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Guyana, after which he embarked on many private jobs that reportedly paid him well. However, the shot businesswoman said that a person with a good upbringing will not take other people’s money.
“This is not fair to us. We are working just as hard as anyone else. Money is not flowing, business is bad. The overhead expense is very high,” the businesswoman related.
She said that she does everything for herself but since she was injured, she cannot do anything. “One week now I can’t move. Do I deserve this?”
