An open arrest warrant has been issued for the man who was on trial in the Berbice High Court on two counts of Carnal Knowledge after he failed to show up in court for the second time on Thursday.
Muntaz Yassim, called ‘Joe’, 54, of New Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, was on trial before Justice James Bovell-Drakes and a mixed Jury for two counts of Carnal Knowledge.
The man had failed to show up in court on December 4, last, for the commencement of his trial and an arrest warrant was issued for him. The matter was put down to Thursday. However, when the matter was called again, Yassim was a no show.
Justice Drakes then issued the second arrest warrant and discharged the jury.
Prosecutrix, Attorney at Law Dionne McCammon appeared on behalf of the state. Attorney at Law Perry Gossai was appearing for the accused.
Yassim who was a money lender is charged with between January 1, and December 22, 2006 having carnal knowledge of a girl 11 years old.
The man is also charged with between December 22, 2006 and November 20, 2007 at New Street Cumberland in Berbice, of having carnal knowledge of a girl 12 years old.
The accused was out on $100,000 bail. He showed up in court on two occasions, but without a lawyer. He subsequently secured the services of Attorney at Law, Gossai.
Justice Bovell-Drakes had told the jury that there is a problem on hand since the accused was absent.
Attorney at Law Gossai had told the court that he had no idea where the accused was, but that he had spoken to him a few days before and was given all assurances that the man would be in court.
He was seen around the day before his court date. There are reports that Yassim has left the jurisdiction.
