“We have not had any serious crime in Zeelugt and Tuschen Housing Schemes, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) for a while,
so I was shocked when I read the article which states that both communities have been subjected to rampant criminal activities.”
This was the emphatic assertion of the Commander of ‘D’ Division, Ian Amsterdam, during a telephone interview yesterday.
The Commander was referring to an article in yesterday’s paper under the caption “Crime forces family to flee home.”
The article quoted an Alliance For Change (AFC) Region Three councillor, Harry Narine Deokinanan as saying that crime in Zeelugt and Tuschen has been so bad that residents are moving out of the areas.
The commander however said that he and his team have been working tirelessly to minimize crime in the Division.
“I was shocked when I saw the article, because we have been working so hard to keep crime at a down low, and then this happens,” the commander stated.
For the month of August, Amsterdam said that seven serious crimes were recorded in the entire division, while no serious crime was reported in Tuschen from July to September. In La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, no serious crime was recorded from July to September 21, last.
For this month, the Senior Officer said that ranks are investigating two cases of break and enter, which he said, did not occur in Tuschen or Zeelugt.
Kaieteur News was told that since the introduction of C-Pets (Creating Positive Environments through Safer Communities and Partnerships), the Division has recorded a decrease of 37 percent in crime as compared to last year.
This project, the commander said, is part of a strategic plan for his division to get communities, faith-based organizations, police and residents to build a closer relationship with each other. It also aims at the reduction of crime, drugs and alcohol abuse among citizens, and promotes sports, culture, and entertainment.
“As a result of C-Pets, and our intervention in the various communities, we have seen a reduction in crime in the
entire division, which is really the objective of all these community projects,” the Commander had emphasised.
In August last, in an effort to eliminate crime in the division, the Commander re-commissioned a police patrol base in Tuschen Housing Scheme.
This newspaper was told that police ranks along with members of the Community Policing Group would be present at the facility on a 24-hour basis to serve residents of the community. The outpost was commissioned several years ago by then Minister of Home Affairs, Gail Teixeira.

I’m a bit disappointed with the reporting of the original story “Crime
forces family to flee home”. Why didn’t KN check with Commander
Amsterdam BEFORE publishing the article? Here’s a person making a bold
statement about the crime frequency in the community and it never
crossed the reporter’s mind to do some basic verification (or the editor
to ask some searching questions)!
Some people might think it’s
just crafty sensationalism to report outlandish claims one day and then
publish the expected comments the next day.
Others might think it’s just amateurish reporting and editing.
