A United States citizen and resident of St. Thomas Virgin Islands, Tanasha Lee Fleming, was sentenced and fined
by Magistrate Ann McLennan on a drug trafficking charge yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The presiding Magistrate sentenced Fleming to five years’ imprisonment and fined her $49,396,500.
Fleming, on December 5, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timheri had in his possession 18 kilograms and 295 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, to which he plead guilty.
Fleming was unrepresented but told the court that he is 28 years old, a mechanic by profession and resides at 7B Contant Street St. Thomas Virgin Islands.
Police prosecutor Dinero Jones said that on the day in question at 9:35 ranks from the narcotics branch at CJIA said Fleming was an ongoing passenger on a Dynamic Airways Flight destined for J.F. K International Airport.
When his suitcase was placed on the conveyor belt officials noticed a strange image emerge when it was being scanned. Ranks removed the suitcase in the presence of the defendant and conducted a search; where they found the suspected cocaine in seven packs of Champion baking powder and five packs of Champion custard powder. The packets were weighed in his presence and amounted 18 kilograms and 295 grams. Further investigations were carried out and the defendant was arrested and charged.
When Magistrate Ann McLennan asked if he had anything to say, he only told the court that he wants the money that was on his person which was amounted to US$300 and $6000 in local currency to be entrusted to U.S Embassy Official, Jacklyn Orrot, who was present in court.
