Although promises have been made that justice will be served, a young woman is worried that this reality may not be realised. The woman who is currently in her mid 20s just a few weeks ago levelled sexual assault allegations against a prominent dentist, a matter that was brought to the attention of the Guyana Police Force.
But according to the woman since making an official report and even facing the perpetrator in the presence of police officers at the Brickdam Police Station, attempts to garner an update on the matter were merely met with assurances that the matter was under investigation.
The woman told this publication that she even visited the Brickdam Police Station to meet with ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken, and was told that the matter was going to be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and that she will be informed of a court date. That was over one week ago.
According to the woman she has not been privy to anything further on the matter.
In a conversation with this publication, the woman said that she is especially concerned that the matter may not be treated as a priority, as the official at the centre of the alleged sexual assault is an established dentist.
This publication had two weeks ago published an article detailing the damning allegations made by the woman. The woman claimed that while she was a patient of the dentist for a few months, it was only last month that he made sexual advances to her. The woman alleged that the dentist (who this publication had then named) made the advances as part of a negotiation tactic for a high-priced dental procedure she required.
The woman claimed that in addition to asking her for favours of a sexual nature, the dentist went on to caress her torso. She remembers being told by the dentist as part of his negotiation tactic, “ ‘you can just lay there for me naked, and you coming here and do that after-hours when my staff leave will convince me you are willing to do anything’.”
The woman recalled not tolerating the dentist’s actions and wasted no time in registering her disgust. She first reported the matter to the Alberttown Police Station upon leaving the dentist’s Charlotte Street, Georgetown office, but was told to take the matter to the Brickdam Police Station where another report was made.
According to the woman, while at the latter Police Station at least two female police ranks made unflattering remarks to her. One rank, she claims, said “what do you want?” suggesting that she was hoping for some financial gain, while another said “if was a young man you wouldn’t ah mine….”
The remarks were brought to the attention of Commander Hicken who confronted, at least one female officer, who categorically denied that the woman was denigrated in any way while at the police station. Hicken told this publication that he is inclined to believe that his officers would not belittle the woman while she made her report at the station.
“That could not have happened; my officer is saying that did not happen,” insisted the ‘A’ Division Commander. The woman has however, maintained her position. She told this publication that she is particularly concerned too that justice will be denied since no action has been taken to prevent the dentist from practicing.
The dentist had admitted to requesting sexual favours from the woman when he reportedly told police ranks that “I was only joking.”
