Brian Haywood, who is currently on remand for attempted murder – accused of setting his sister alight – will serve 46 months for possession of an illegal substance for the purpose of trafficking.
Magistrate Ann McLennan took into consideration that he pleaded guilty and admitted to the offence and fined the accused $75,600 along with 46 months imprisonment.
The current inmate of Camp Street Prison was caught red handed with a quantity of cannabis in October. Haywood appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to address the charge.
The court heard that on October 15 at the prison, Haywood had in his possession 63 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded guilty to the charge and told the magistrate that, “I don’t want to waste the court’s time.”
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones said that at 13:35hrs Police and Prison Officers were conducting a search on the defendant and his cell. Police found two white buckets placed one in the other, with the handles removed. Upon seeing this officers became suspicious and decided to search further. They discovered a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems. The prisoner was told of the offence and admitted to it being in his possession. He was subsequently charged.
Haywood’s incident involving his stepsister, Samantha Schwartz, 38, of Section D, South Sophia, occurred when the accused, who is a cobbler by profession, asked her about a pair of slippers that was allegedly stolen from his stall. He reportedly then doused her with a flammable substance before setting her alight. Schwartz sustained burns to her upper body and was hospitalised.
