Hours after Commissioner of Police (ag) Seelall Persaud pledged that there will be no cover-up in the investigations
into the death of Asif Rahim Khartoon, the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has completed investigations into the matter.
Police in a statement issued last evening said that the file on the matter was submitted yesterday to the Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority for review and advice. The file will then be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further advice before any possible charges could be instituted.
Khartoon, a fisherman of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, died on Thursday last, three days after he was released from the Leonora Police Station.
A post mortem examination revealed that he died from multiple injuries to his head, face, chest and other parts of his body
While the dead man’s wife Soorsattie Chandrapaul, is convinced that her husband died because of the blows meted out to him by the lawmen, the police have indicated that he was assaulted by a fellow detainee.
On Monday, relatives met with the Top Cop after staging a protest outside his office. When the dead man’s wife emerged from the meeting, she told members of the media that she was pleased with the assurances offered by the Police Commissioner.
According to Chandrapaul, the Top Cop promised a proper and swift investigation to get to the bottom of the matter. She said, too, that Persaud told her that two police officers remained under close arrest.
The grieving wife said her husband was the breadwinner for the family and she is at a loss as to how she and her family will get by without him. She said that all she wants at this time is justice for her husband.
“I don’t think he deserve to die like this. He keep saying is the police beat him…I highly appreciate that the Commissioner call us in, and he said that there will be nothing that will be covered up and I am so happy for that, because I want justice for my husband… because he die and I am a widow now with four children, and I don’t know how I will make life out,” she said.
Family members said, too, if they do not see action being taken in the matter over the next few days, they will step up their protest action.
Kaieteur News understands that two Constables who had arrested Khartoon are at the centre of the OPR investigations. However, several police ranks, including officers were questioned during the probe as investigators are also looking at department lapses that might have occurred.
