Troy Younge, a prisoner recently busted with marijuana at the Georgetown Prisons was yesterday jailed for sixty months
on a drug trafficking charge. The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The Camp Street facility is no stranger to drug trafficking cases but on November 9, last about 11:20 hours, Younge was seen acting suspiciously by a prison officer who decided to search him. The rank confiscated a plastic juice bottle from him in which he found a quantity of marijuana.
When weighed, the illicit substance amounted to 157 grams. Younge admitted that the drug was his and he was subsequently charged with possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking.
During his first court appearance on November 13, last, Younge denied the charge and a trial was subsequently conducted. The case was prosecuted by Police Inspector Michael Grant and the accused was found guilty.
Magistrate Latchman, in handing down her decision, said that she had considered all the factors in his favour. She said that her decision was based on the fact that Younge is presently serving a three-year sentence for a similar offence which had commenced on January 30.
The court had considered too, that the offence occurred in a prison facility. Magistrate Latchman said that the court needed to act in a manner which would prohibit others from committing a similar offence.
Younge was subsequently sentenced.
