Nov 28, 2014 Letters
Dear Editor,
I refer to letter from Samuel J. Goolsarran captioned “On the Prorogation of the National Assembly/Parliament” that was carried in your November 26, 2014 edition. It was clear from Goolsarran’s missive that not only has he adopted a supportive role of President Ramotar’s prorogation of Parliament, but also a direct and partisan political position in support of the ruling party when he stated “The voting population will not be fooled, for it is well known that bitterness and spite from some politicians are the motivating factors for their postures.” There were more invectives and violent denunciations of the opposition parties in his missive, citing them as “poor role models for the children and people of this dear land of Guyana” and setting a “distasteful national tone” through “their political theatrics”. Mr. Goolsarran even had a go at his own brother’s organization “the not-so transparent and biased Transparency Institute of Guyana (TIG)”. I wonder what would be Goolsarran’s brother’s response to the description of the TIG.
Editor, Mr. Goolsarran is the Executive Director of the Consultative Association of Guyanese Industries Limited (CAGI), which is the representative body for all employers. Where is the neutrality of Mr. Goolsarran as Head of the Employers’ Organization in adopting a position that is obviously in support of a particular political party? Is Mr. Goolsarran speaking on behalf of the employers that have subscribed as members of CAGI?
It is a known fact that Mr. Goolsarran, a retired ILO officer, enjoys the largesse of this government as head of CAGI by being afforded the opportunity to sit on more than 10 state boards, including the University of Guyana; and not forgetting the numerous overseas trips accorded to him as a government nominee representing the employers’ organization.
Editor, I think Mr. Goolsarran needs to clarify whether his missive is in his personal capacity or as the Executive Director of CAGI, and if it’s the former how will he not allows his personal ideological position to not influence the discharge of his professional role in a supposedly impartial manner? There is a serious conflict of interest here.
