Police have recovered the body of 19-year old Neeraj Michael, called “Buckie” from the Mahaicony River, several hours after he was hacked to death by his friend.
Michael’s body which bore two chops to the head was found around 09:35 hours, confirming the police’s earlier suspicion that he was murdered.
His friend is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Police say their investigations have revealed that Michael of Champagne, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, was at a wedding house at Hyde Park, Mahaicony River on Tuesday, when he had a misunderstanding with some persons.
He later left with other persons in a boat during which it is suspected that he was chopped with a cutlass and thrown into the river.
A source at Mahaicony told this newspaper that Michael boarded the boat with his friend and his friend’s brother. They were all under the influence of alcohol.
During the boat ride, the friend dealt him several chops to his head and pushed him overboard.
According to the source, the friend’s brother upon seeing what happened, jumped overboard and swan to shore where he related the incident to his stepfather.
The stepfather went to investigate and found that the suspect had fled the boat.
“But when he check de boat he see blood and a cutlass inside,” the source said.
The police were informed and a search was launched in the river for Michael, while checks were made for the suspect.
Police soon received information that the suspect was hiding out in an abandoned house in the village.
A party of police ranks led by Assistant Superintendent Mahadeo Singh went to the location and surrounded the house.
Realizing that he had nowhere to go, the suspect meekly surrendered. He admitted to chopping Michael and took police to the scene where the incident occurred.
“He tell de police dat he was high and he ain’t know wha get in he head,” the source said.
The suspect will remain in custody until a post mortem examination is done on Michael’s body.
