With much emphasis placed on women’s empowerment in today society, the Men Affairs’
Bureau (MAB) within the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is continuously working to promote and support the leadership development of men.
On Saturday, men and boys from various organisations gathered at the Police Officers Mess Annex at Eve Leary to participate in the annual empowerment affair hosted by the MAB.
The event dubbed “Magnificent Men 4” featured poetry, dance and drama depicting various issues affecting men.
The programme, a collaborative effort between the MAB and the Guyana Police Force, (GPF) was also held to commemorate International Men’s Day, which was observed under the theme, “Working Together for Men and Boys.” International Men’s Day, was observed on November 19, last.
The “Magnificent Men 4” programme featured talks from chief stakeholders including Human Services Minister, Dr. Jennifer Webster, MAB Administrator Diego Alphonso, BD1 Leadership representative Alister Collins and Force Training Officer, Paul Williams.
According to the MAB Administrator, the event was born out of a common concern by members of society to address several issues affecting males. He noted that the partnership between the GPF and MAB has been about placing emphasis on going into communities and seeking to build relationships with men at the grassroot levels with the aim of helping them fulfill their potential.
He said that the programme not only seeks to highlight the talent of men and boys but also to promote a positive message to the male members of society. Alphonso said that the event provides an opportunity for men to reflect, be inspired and challenged by other well respected males of their era.
The MAB Director said that the organisation is committed to working closely with men to ensure that they are restored to fulfill their roles as fathers, husbands, positive role models and leaders. He explained that recently more emphasis has been placed on striking a balance in the approach of empowering males in a similar manner in which women are being empowered.
According to Mr. Alphonso, the MAB has been working closely with the Women Affairs Bureau, (WAB) to conduct discussions on topics such as domestic violence and suicide in schools and workplaces. In addition, the Administrator noted that a Clinical Psychologist has volunteered his services to address the counseling needs of both male and female victims of abuse.
“It is our ultimate goal to reach both males and females; to strengthen the alliance and partnership between the two genders as we strive to empower and assist them in understanding that each party has a unique role to play in the development of society,” Alphonso said.
During her brief address, Minister Webster urged the MAB to seek to further foster positive roles in men by starting a mentorship for young boys. She encouraged the group of men and boys to build better relationships with their families and to give their best at all times.
“Your being here on this earth signifies that you have a purpose… your life must be seen as one of value,” Minister Webster said.
The event involved interactive sessions and dialogue between the members of the audience and facilitators.
People’s Progressive Party Member of Parliament, Rev Kwame Gilbert, who also spoke at the event, urged the older men to be positive role models and set the pace for the younger boys. He encouraged the gathering of men to reclaim their identity as leaders in the homes workplaces and daily activities.
Reverend Gilbert noted, “As men, if we are going to help our children we must ensure that we give them a vision of what is possible but we must also embrace the reality of what we must do to ensure that that which we place in their spirits …as they become older they can achieve.”
